- write a great book
- have an engaged platform
- can afford to hire fantastic designers and editors and pay for all the other associated costs
- understand distribution and know what it takes to create a good system
- have a robust network of friends and associates (this could even be your distribution system if they will buy books)
- willing to market and publicize your book (or hire the right people to do it for you)
