I was on a group Zoom call yesterday when a woman broke down in tears. She’s an author and a businesswoman, juggling a mountain of tasks, managing endless expectations, and feeling utterly defeated by her own to-do list.
Maybe you’ve been there. I know I have.
Our modern world glorifies multitasking and relentless productivity. Everywhere you turn, there are shiny new tools, schedules, and strategies promising to “fix” the chaos. But here’s the truth: none of them address the real core issue.
So here’s a fundamental question I want you to ask yourself: What does my heart want?
Not your mind—your mind is a chatterbox full of “I should do this,” “I need to finish that,” or “I have no idea what to do next!” Tuning into your heart may sound corny, but bear with me.
Why did you write your book? Why are you doing this work? What lights you up and makes it meaningful?
To stay focused and not get tangled in the endless details that bombard us every day, we must reconnect with our “why.” (I know, the word is overused, but it fits here.)
I felt this overwhelm myself just a few days ago. Even success brings its own wave of demands and details that can feel like too much.
Helping my clients tune into what truly matters is at the heart of what I do. Sure, there are plenty of transactional services out there, and that’s fine. But my work goes deeper.
So, let me ask you: What is your story? Why do you do what you do? What do you want others to know? Why does it matter?
When you answer these questions from the heart, it transforms everything you do. People can feel it. The media can feel it. Your readers can feel it. Your heart speaks louder than any strategy, and the results follow.
I once worked with an author who struggled with this process. But when she embraced it, she had breakthrough after breakthrough. Her media appearances became powerful and authentic, and the results? Outstanding. To this day, we’ve remained close, and I just wrapped up another successful campaign for her.
If this resonates with you (and I suspect it does if you’re still reading), here are a few steps to realign yourself:
- Pause when you feel overwhelmed. Step away. Breathe. For me, it’s a walk with my dog on Cooper Mountain or a run. Find your reset button.
- Ask yourself meaningful questions:
- What moves me about my story?
- What do I want to share with others?
- Why does this matter to me?
Focus on the feeling behind why you care so deeply. That emotional connection fuels you in ways no external tool can.
Book publicity and marketing have their share of strategies and tactics, many of which I share here. But none of it truly matters unless you’re connected to your heart and the reasons your book needs to be in the world. Realigning isn’t just about feeling better—though it absolutely helps—it’s about making a greater impact.
Bottom line
That’s my mission: to help you stay aligned, whether through these posts, Savvy Sunday News, or when we work together. I’ve shared a bit about why I do this work, but I think it’s time to revisit my story. I’ll share it with you soon.
Until then…
To your success,
Joanne
