Someone asked me this question the other day: In what ways are you the best at what you do, and how do you tell that story?
Phew! Those are powerful questions. How would you respond to them?
It made me think of this amazing content creator I know who dubbed me, “A badass with heart.”
I knew what he meant. It’s the blending of confidence with compassion, creating a perfect balance between getting things done and deeply caring about the people I work with. It’s being a cheerleader for my clients, yet telling the truth when it needs to be told.
A badass with heart. I have to admit, I didn’t hate it. I loved it, in fact, because it seems to capture how I operate in the world.
As a media insider, I’ve spent years honing an understanding of what newsrooms and the media need. My roots in radio broadcasting gave me a strong foundation in deadlines and timelines, and that knowledge has been invaluable throughout my career. I know what editors and producers are looking for—and more importantly, how to deliver it in a way that works for everyone.
Being in the PR business has taught me what works in this ever-evolving industry. I don’t rely on what used to work, but I don’t throw it away either. My approach is both innovative and time-tested. It’s never “either/or”—it’s about finding the “both/and” that makes things click. And I believe this really is the key.
Along the way, I’ve been fortunate enough to collaborate with some of the most remarkable minds in the business—legends like Brian Tracy, Ken Blanchard, Richard Bandler, Geneen Roth, and Wayne Dyer. Their insights and influence have enriched my work, and it’s been an honor to help them shape their messages for the world.
My clients include both authors and publishers, but regardless of who I work with, my focus remains on merging a deep understanding of the media landscape with a true dedication to the craft. I don’t just want to get results—I want to get results that resonate, that leave a lasting impact, and that speak to the heart.
I have a particular love for working with nonfiction authors. There’s something incredibly powerful about helping them get their messages out into the world, sharing their expertise, their passion, and their stories in a way that moves and informs people. It’s a privilege to support their journeys and be part of that creative process.
In addition to my work as a publicist, I also teach others how to be their own publicist. Not every author or business professional has the resources to hire someone, but everyone deserves a shot at building a strong, successful media presence. I believe in empowering people with the knowledge and tools they need to confidently navigate the media landscape themselves—sharing insider strategies that have made a difference for my clients.
And let’s not forget media training—an essential component of any successful book campaign. Knowing how to handle media interviews, articulate key messages, and stay composed under pressure can make or break an opportunity. Media training helps clients deliver their messages with confidence, authenticity, and impact. After all, being great at what you do isn’t enough if you can’t communicate it effectively when it matters most.
So, if you ask me how I tell my story? It’s simple: I’m a badass with heart. And that’s how I help my clients tell theirs, too.
To your success!
Joanne
